She lost the fight...

Kate fought hard for just over a year. She will be sorely missed by so many people. Thanks for visiting!

I have a headache...

We've been told that meningitis causes a pretty bad headache. I think Kate agrees ;(

They have isolated the bacteria that has infected Kate. It is called Streptococcus pneumo. They are now running 'sensitivity' tests on the bacterial culture to determine what antibiotic to best treat with. She is currently being given two strong, general antibiotics (vancomycin and cephamycin). The hope is they can reduce and target the bacteria more selectively and therefore reduce the antibiotic's side effects.

We spoke with the neurology fellow and we all agreed it would be good to do an EEG for a few hours to make sure Kate isn't having any clinical or sub-clinical (ones we can't see) seizure activity. We're not expecting anything, but with all of this stress on her body/brain, it is not unlikely that she could have seizures.

We should be attempting to start feeding her again anytime now. We're just waiting for a feeding pump and direction on how we're going to make up her formula. Her stomach has had quite a while to settle down, so hopefully she will tolerate some food. Hopefully this will help perk her up.
