UCSF - July 13th

Kate did well last night, especially considering she was wired up to the gills. She was a trooper, as usual, and got upset only when hungry and gassy. She stayed in her crib the whole night.

The results of the EEG did not show any abnormalities. However, it sounds like it wasn't able to locate the part of her brain where the seizures came from.

Basically, they were not able to determine why she had the seizures. Their best guess now (and ours) is that it was a result of a blood clot from the surgery. Apparently MRIs can only detect small strokes or clots within about a week from the occurrence. The highest likelihood for this to happen was during the surgery itself. Apparently, it takes this long for the effects to result in a seizure. The clot would have caused a portion of her brain to become slightly irritated and then swollen due to lack of good blood flow. This swelling then can result in seizure. Again, this is just an educated guess.

We should be leaving the hospital tomorrow as soon as we talk to the pharmacist. Kate will be on anti-seizure meds for about a month to make sure she doesn't have seizures again as a result of the surgery. Apparently, she's at the highest risk for surgery related seizure for about a month after surgery.
